Creating a Supply Chain from Conception to End-of-Life
June 10, 2025 | 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm ET | Lasell University Science and Technology Center, Newton MA USA Register!
The presentation will outline the key stages of hardware product development: Concept, Design, Prototyping, Validation Testing, New Product Introduction (NPI), Production, and End-of-Life (EOL). At each stage, cost implications and opportunities for outsourcing are discussed.Early stages, like Concept and Design, involve moderate costs and benefit from outsourcing market research and specialized engineering to accelerate development and leverage external expertise. Prototyping, though high in per-unit cost, can be optimized by using rapid prototyping and PCB assembly services. Validation Testing is costly due to compliance and reliability testing; outsourcing to certified labs ensures thorough validation but may slow iterations.
NPI and Production involve the highest investment, focusing on tooling, supply chains, and quality control. Partnering with contract manufacturers and NPI consultants enables scalable and efficient launches but demands tight coordination. EOL planning, while lower in cost, can benefit from outsourced repair, support, and recycling services to streamline phase-out and maintain customer satisfaction.
Outsourcing offers speed, specialization, and scalability across the stages, but also introduces risks like reduced control, communication challenges, and IP concerns. Strategic outsourcing, with clear oversight, is essential to managing cost and quality throughout the product lifecycle.
